Review 45: Norigami (Being a god with only 5 yen jobs)

Review 45: Norigami (Being A God with only 5 yen Jobs)

Norigami; funny, loud and awesome all the way through. This anime is sure to make you laugh all the way through, with funny character designs and exciting character designs... but, is being a god all that good?

This anime is like no other, it revolves around gods and how they gain respect through doing jobs for humans for only 5 yen. It turns out that this is how all gods in japan gain respect, and all of the gods are actually in human form and live amongst ordinary people... However, even though they live amongst humans, humans cannot see them unless they have a strong sixth sense. So gods go un-noticed unless you strongly believe in them, have a job on the way or if you have a strong sixth sense.

The anime revolves around a god named Yato. He goes un-noticed by all, he doesn't have his own shrine and no one respects him at all; he also is noticed by most other gods. So Yato is homeless and has no one with him to help him on his way. It begins with Yato gaining a job where he has to find a missing cat called Milord. He puts up posters and screeches the name from the top of his lungs, until he finds it in the road; He jumps out in front of a lorry to save the cat. as he does a young school girl named Hiyori sees him and also jumps in front of the lorry to save Yato. No one else sees Yato jump in front of the lorry, so everyone thinks that Hiyori jumped in front of the lorry just to save a cat.

She sits up and looks over at her body whilst she's next to Yato. By being hit by the lorry, she had turned into a half phantom. She wasn't completely dead, but she wasn't completely alive; from this point on-wards she keeps on having random phases were her soul leaves her body, when it does she grows a long tail and her body will be on the floor sleeping quietly. When her soul separates from her body, she is in the half phantom form. Yato explains to her that he's a god, and gods can only gain respect for doing small jobs for those who need them; the only downside to it is that you only get 5 yen and that Yato is homeless and has no weapon to fight with. He also explains to her that gods need weapons to fight with against demons, and weapons are actually people who have almost passed on but want to live.

Yato: The god of calamity. He is homeless and sleeps outside of another shrine that had previously been abandoned. He's been alive for hundreds of years and has once killed a Shinki, (One of the god’s weapons). He isn't recognized by most gods, and the ones that do know him hate him for what he has done in the past. He always wears the same sweaty clothes, a jersey and matching joggers. The only thing that he has that is valuable to him is his phone, a pen and bottle full of 5 yen coins. He's loud and funny and cannot be serious to save his life, and every time he tries to be serious; someone has to ruin it by laughing at him, insulting him or doing something for it to back fire.

Hiyori: she's a normal high school student until she meets yato. She’s constantly looking for him and trying to help him out, bu he doesn't want her to get in trouble or get hurt. After the she was hit by the lorry, she gained a tendency to randomly fall asleep and as she does her soul wanders around looking for Yato. She asks Yato to fix her body so she won't keep on separating from it, he says he will but leaves it at the side as he doesn't know what he's doing... But Hiyori believes him when he says that he'll help. Eventually, she becomes very attached to Yato and becomes close friends with him. She's a bright and caring character, she helps out Yato and other associates of his throughout the anime, and she also adds a lighter and more positive side to the series.

Yukine, Yatos Shinki: he was found by Yato when he was trying to save Hiyori, His previous weapon had quit on him so at that point in time he had nothing. Yukine causes more trouble than he's worth when he isn't fighting. He steals money, a skateboard, smashes all of the windows at a school and attempts to "touch" Hiyori as she sleeps. All of his sins then hurt Yato, yukine however doesn't care about Yato or the fact that he's constantly being injured because of Yukines actions. Yukine is only a young teenage boy, meaning that he never abides by the rules, he hates being told what to do, he hates people asking him questions or even talking to him, he hates being around others and he hates being caught out... he also hates the fact that he's dead; anyone would really, but he hates the fact that he's dead so much that he feels like he has to take it out on everyone and everything, as if it's everyone's fault. Even though his character design seems adorable, his personality is negative and he adds a depressing mood when any other character is around him, he's constantly storming off in anger and he hates other opinions.

The anime itself was fun to watch; even though it can be seen as quite a dark kind of anime if you haven't watched it. When i first heard of it, i thought it would just be gods killing demons and then a god meeting a human and becoming friends. But when i actually took the time to watch the anime, (I watched it all in one night) i realized that there is a lot more to it than just gods and demons. For starts, there are rivalries in between gods, not all gods are what they made out to be and it makes the viewer look t certain gods in a completely different way. Also, the use of weapons who are actually humans works well; instead of a god just having one dead set weapon that they can only use, the gods that are portrayed in the anime can have multiple weapons for multiple uses.

The animation and character style works well with what the creator wanted to portray. The character designs themselves are quite basic, but i think it works well; it means that if the characters are in a crowd of normal people you can't easily pick them out... If you've ever watched yu-gi-oh then you should know what i mean. The concept of gods earning their respect and money through doing jobs for only 5yen is very interesting and adds a good twist on the amount of effort they have to put into there jobs; it adds a twist to what we think gods normally do, e.g. sitting in a clouds drinking wine and watching people pass by.

The anime itself has good animation quality, it seems pretty up to date, the background music and settings also suit the mood. All in All, it's a brilliantly styled anime, it ads new concepts and ideas to what we would originally think and it can be uplifting even in the serious moments which is good as if it's too serious all of the time... i can get bored very often, so random moments even in serious situations adds a good aspect of emotional powered variations in the anime.

I do think that this is a brilliant anime, it was defiantly worth the watch and it has to be one of the first animes I’ve enjoyed in a long, long time.
